The Visitor Centre

Discover mining heritage in 1000m² of exhibition space, with many interactive areas. Experience a unique journey through time and space to meet the people who shaped the outstanding landscapes of the mining basin.

Designed by Philippe Prost architecture agency in association with Du&Ma agency Museum Exhibit Designers, the Cité des Électriciens Visitor Centre is housed in two buildings, a contemporary structure and a former housing row in the coron. 
The first building stands out with its magnificent shell of enamelled red tiles (1st prize, the Laterrecuite Architendance 2016 award in the tertiary category) and invites you to discover the mining landscape and  town planning. From Valenciennes to Béthune, enjoy a rich journey around slag heaps, pits and housing estates, from the origins of the industrial revolution to the closure of the last pit. 
The second building takes you into the heart of a rehabilitated miner’s home. From building materials to lifestyle, from the first renovations of mining towns to the reconversion of major mining sites, you will discover what shaped and still influences the specificity of the mining basin region and its inhabitants.

An entertaining and interactive exploration

Scale models, interactive games, audio-visual content and hands-on features enable visitors of all ages to discover mining heritage in a simple and fun way.
